Burning in Water is pleased to feature a two-artist presentation at Untitled Miami 2018 highlighting recent works by the Brooklyn-based artist Rachel Eulena Williams and the Oakland-based artist Oliver Lee Jackson.

Using shaped elements of canvas and rope, Rachel Eulena Williams creates complex, beguiling wall works that are utterly free of the typical constraints of stretched canvas paintings. Instead, Williams employs disparate fragments of un-stretched canvas arranged in topographical compositions held in place by painted rope. Liberated from any conventional system of structure or support, Williams' compositions inhabit and activate space in an utterly unique manner. Defying facile categorization as either painting or sculpture, Williams' works are simultaneously disorienting, whimsical and arresting.

Since his emergence in the late 1960s in association with the Black Artists Group (BAG) in St. Louis, Oliver Lee Jackson has created a singular body of work over the past five decades. Jackson's paintings typically conjoin elements of abstraction and figuration even while standing resolutely apart from such categories. Drawing upon a wide array of both Western and non-Western influences, Jackson creates paintings intended to serve as portals into the viewer's own consciousness and imagination. For Jackson, the meaning of his paintings lie beyond the works themselves, with the paintings operating as subjects of contemplation and ultimately transcendence for the viewer.

Rachel Eulena Williams, (b. 1991, Miami, FL), graduated from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and completed a residency at the New York Studio Factory in 2014. 

Solo exhibitions include Coastal at Cooper Cole in Toronto; Coco Currents at Turn Gallery in New York; Inflatable Tear at Ceysson & Bénétiėre in New York and Zero Gravity at Ceysson & Bénétiėre in Saint Etienne, France. Williams has exhibited in group sows at Night Gallery (Los Angeles); Derek Eller Gallery (New York); Ceysson & Bénétiėre (Luxembourg); Ceysson & Bénétiėre (Wandhaff); The Journal Gallery (Brooklyn), Mass Gallery (Texas), Sometime Salon (San Francisco); Sleep Center (New York); Firehouse (New York); and Center Street (New York).

Williams lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Oliver Lee Jackson (b. 1935, St. Louis, Missouri) is a painter, sculptor and printmaker based in Oakland, California. Jackson was awarded a BFA from Illinois Wesleyan University (1958) and an MFA from the University of Iowa, Iowa City (1963). During the 1960s, Jackson worked extensively with community-based arts groups in the St. Louis region during which time he was Assistant Director of the People’s Art Center and later the Director of Program Uhuru. He was closely aligned with the landmark Black Artists Group (BAG), which included musicians, theater performers and dancers in addition to visual artists, and he was a close collaborator of renowned jazz musician Julius Hemphill. Jackson also co-founded the arts organization African Continuum. 

Artwork by Oliver Lee Jackson is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY); the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY); the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC); the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA); the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, IL); the Detroit Institute of the Arts (Detroit, MI); the New Orleans Museum of Art (New Orleans, LA); and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA).

Jackson was an artist-in-residence at Harvard University from 2000-2001. His artwork has been exhibited extensively at major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY); the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY); the Museo de Arte Moderna (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil); the Seattle Art Museum (Seattle, WA); the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA); the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, Illinois); the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo, NY); and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA), among many others. Jackson's recent show at Burning in Water - New York, Untitled Original, was recommended by Artnet News and Time Out - New York and selected as a "must-see" exhibition by Artforum magazine. A major exhibition of recent paintings by Oliver Lee Jackson will open at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC in March of 2019.
